EMPLOYER RESPONSIBILITY

What requirements apply to employee accommodation?

When you as an employer provide accommodation to one or more employees, you must ensure that the accommodation provided is safe and healthy to live in. This applies to workplace accommodation as well as other types of accommodation such as villas, holiday homes and solutions such as containers and caravans.

The accommodation must meet the following requirements:

  • Access to a toilet and drinking water
  • Drainage for wastewater
  • Protection against damp, cold, heat and noise
  • Sufficient daylight and windows that can be opened to allow ventilation.
  • Heating facilities and a satisfactory indoor climate.
  • As a general rule, no more than two persons per living room.

Service dwellings, offshore facilities, drivers covered by the EU rules on driving and rest periods, the au pair scheme, and housing covered by certain collective agreements are exempt from these rules.
